It lies on the eastern bank of the Nile, 20km south of Al Minya. It has 39 rock tombs, with many important engravings which depict life and daily activities during the Middle Kingdom. The most important are Amenemhat tomb, Khnum Hotep II tomb, Baqit II and Khety. This area also hosts a temple constructed by Hatshepsut and Thotmes III known as Istabl Antar. The Ptolemies called it Cave of Artemis.
